Jessie Bates has 10 interceptions in his four seasons with the Bengals. He made $4.9 million in the four years of his slotted rookie contract before receiving the franchise tag this past March. Bates even rose to be the Bengals’ team NFLPA rep and expressed frustration with the collectively bargained negotiation of the franchise tag element of the CBA earlier this year. He’s always been business-savvy and with an eye on playing perfectly a system that’s more often than not set up against the NFL player. Yes, even as a 20-year-old, Bates was already plotting the intricacies of his contractual career path. That would be for leverage and a potential second bite at the apple in his 20s. Bates explained then the reason he wanted to come out of school a year early and was excited at potentially being a second-round pick instead of the first was that he wanted to be as young as possible when signing his second NFL contract.
